The History of Golden Crescent Chorus

The present chapter was chartered in 1958, since then The Golden Crescent Chorus has been a very active and dynamic group that takes pride in our performances and our quality of singing.

The Lorain Chapter had a rebirth in 1959 with a charter renewal for the chapter originally founded in 1943. The original group had a large following of men who worked at U. S. Steel and quartet names like the Rusty Pipers and the Steel Benders reflected that. The chapter broke up in the late 40's or early 50's.

The second volume of the history of Lorain's barbershop harmony began with re-organization in 1958, with charter issued in January 1959. There have been numerous directors with the longest tenure belonging to Gene Pearce who began directing in 1970. The chorus was originally called The Lorain Harborsharpers but changed the name to The Golden Crescent Chorus in 1974 when the area from Sandusky to Cleveland was labeled The Golden Crescent by the Lorain Journal.

The chapter has put on an annual spectacular each fall since rechartering, beginning with Flying Saucers of 1959-60 and continuing through their 50th Anniversary Show in November 2009. The chorus competed as a small chorus for a number of years being named the JAD first place winner in 1990. The chorus has grown to the large chorus category and only competes occasionally. Performance opportunities abound throughout the year, with the chorus taking advantage of many of those opportunities.
